Version: 1.0
๐ก๏ธ Your safety is our priority. This document contains recommendations for safely using SecondBook and protecting yourself from fraud.
Operator / Responsible Party
The 2ndBook service is provided by Ilnur Stybayev, an independent individual developer (not a legal entity). 2ndBook is a non-commercial tool that lets users find and contact each other directly. The operator is not a party to any transaction between users, does not hold, transfer or retain funds, and charges no commission. Any purchase, sale or exchange happens directly between users and outside the operator's responsibility. Data protection contact: support@secondbook.kz.
1. Account Security
1.1. Creating a Strong Password
To protect your account, use a strong password:
- Minimum 8 characters (we recommend 12+);
- Combination of uppercase and lowercase letters;
- Numbers and special characters (!@#$%^&*);
- Unique password not used on other sites;
- Do not use personal information (birthday, name).
1.2. Two-Factor Authentication
โ
We recommend enabling: Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an additional layer of protection. Even if someone learns your password, they won't be able to log in without the second factor.
Available 2FA methods:
- PIN code in the app;
- Biometrics (fingerprint, Face ID);
- SMS code (less secure, but better than nothing).
1.3. Device Protection
- Set up screen lock on your device;
- Do not log into your account from others' or public devices;
- Log out of your account after using someone else's device;
- Regularly update the operating system and application.
1.4. Suspicious Activity
Contact us immediately if you notice:
- Login from an unfamiliar device or location;
- Profile changes you didn't make;
- Messages sent without your knowledge;
- Listings you didn't create.
2. Safe Transactions
2.1. Verifying Seller/Buyer
Before completing a transaction, check:
- User rating and number of reviews
- Registration date on the platform
- Transaction history
- Profile verification status
- Adequacy of communication
2.2. Communication
โ ๏ธ Important: Conduct all correspondence only through SecondBook chat. This protects you and creates evidence in case of disputes.
Recommendations:
- Do not switch to third-party messengers at the request of the other party;
- Do not share personal data (address, passport) before confirming the transaction;
- Keep correspondence until the transaction is completed;
- Be polite but cautious.
2.3. Payment
๐ซ NEVER:
- Transfer prepayment to personal cards
- Send photos of cards or documents
- Click links for "payment confirmation"
- Share SMS codes
Safe payment methods:
- Cash at in-person meeting;
- Cash on delivery (for shipping).
SecondBook never handles your money. Payment is settled directly between you and the other user, off-platform.
2.4. In-Person Meetings
If you've arranged an in-person book handoff:
- Meet in crowded places (cafe, shopping center)
- Meet during daytime
- Tell someone about the meeting
- Do not invite strangers to your home
- Check the book before payment
- Do not bring large amounts of cash
2.5. Shipping
When sending/receiving books by mail:
- Use verified delivery services;
- Process the shipment with a contents inventory;
- Photograph the book and packaging before sending;
- Keep the tracking number;
- When receiving, check the contents with the courier present (if possible).
3. Recognizing Fraud
3.1. Signs of Fraud
| Red Flag |
What It Means |
| Too low price |
A rare book for pennies โ most likely a scam |
| Urgency |
"Today only", "Urgent" โ pressure on decision |
| 100% prepayment |
An honest seller will agree to payment on delivery |
| Switch to messenger |
Attempt to avoid platform control |
| Strange links |
Phishing โ data theft |
| Request for personal data |
A transaction doesn't require passport or card CVV |
| Grammar errors |
Automatic translation โ possibly a foreign scammer |
| New account without reviews |
Increased risk (not always a scammer, but caution needed) |
3.2. Typical Fraud Schemes
"Prepayment for a Rare Book"
The scammer lists a rare book at a good price, demands prepayment, and disappears.
Protection: Do not prepay to strangers. Use secure transaction.
"Fake Delivery"
After payment, they send a tracking number for a non-existent or someone else's package.
Protection: Check the tracking number immediately. Use cash on delivery.
"Book Substitution"
Instead of the ordered book, another one arrives or in worse condition.
Protection: Ask for photos from different angles. Open the package with the courier present.
"Phishing"
A link for "payment confirmation" leads to a fake site.
Protection: Never click external links. All operations โ only in the app.
"Overpayment Refund"
The scammer "accidentally" overpays and asks you to return the difference.
Protection: Do not return money until you verify the payment is real.
